Telecommuting
An Excellent Career Potential
Telecommuting has really taken off over the past several years.
You may
also hear this term referred to as:
- telework
- teleworking
- e-commuting
- e-work
- working at home (WAH)
- or simply "working
from home" (WFH)
But please don't get this term confused with the other section of this
website titled homebased
business.
Home
business opportunities are
something you create....and work for yourself.
Teleworking is...working at your current job, but performing your job
tasks from home instead of the office.
The e-commute (or any other term you choose) are based on a similar
concept...
"an agreement between you and your organization
(your boss) that allows you the option of performing your work
activities from home".
Or...working from another site away from your primary office location.
Sometimes
it may be only for a for hours, or one day every other week...or full
telework from home where you spend most (if not all) of your time at
home.
With the advance of technology today, teleworking is becoming more
popular.
You are able to stay in contact with your home office with
such IT systems as:
- virtual private networks
- video teleconferencing
- VoIP (or voice over IP)
I recommend you visit http://streaming-media-info.com
for some great information on video teleconferencing and digital media.
Companies may see an advantage of e-commuting by allowing people to
contribute to the success of the company from far away. This, in turn,
may help reduce costs such as travel reimbursement.
Just as there are advantages to working from home, there is also a
downside.
- In my experience, although telecommuting is
the latest buzz,
it has not caught up to today's management style.
- Managers are reluctant to release employees and
allow them to work from
home.
- This is especially true of managers who may
have a hard time
communicating and assigning tasks to employees.
- If it is hard for your manager to communicate
with you while you are
already in the building...how effective will they be when you are miles
away and therefore they cannot "reach out and touch" you?
According to the "Telework Coalition.com", the ten best teleworking
jobs are:
- Programmer
- Lawyer
- Customer service personnel (help desk support)
- Salesperson
- Accountant and/or auditor
- Manager (not sure where they came up with this
one)
- Writer and/or editor
- Webpage maintainer
- New media
- Artist and/or designer (art jobs)
Whether you choose home business opportunities or decide to seek
telecommuting potentials, the key is to prepare yourself and seek
career education and training as needed.
