There are many different
outlines to consider.
Here is a list of the
three basic
formats that the hiring manager (employer) is expecting to
see.
Chronological:
(focuses on your career over time)
This resume type is more suited for individuals with a steady work
record.

- Easy to read
- Displays job growth in skills and
responsibility
- Disadvantages
- Exposes gaps in employment
- Not good if you are lacking a strong work
history
- Highlights frequent job changes.
Functional: (focuses on your skills and
abilities)
This resume type is more suited for individuals with little to no
employment history.
- Advantages
- Organizes
a variety of experience
- Disguises gaps in employment
- Disadvantages
- May be viewed with suspicion by employers who
like to see employment
dates
Combination: (focuses on aspects of both
chronological and functional resume writing)
- Advantages
- Highlights
most relevant skills
- Combines skills developed in a variety of jobs
- Disadvantages
- Confusing if not well organized
- Requires more effort to prepare
