Resume Cover
Letter
Grab the Employer's Attention
Each resume cover letter should have a specific purpose in mind.
This
will save you trouble down the road.
And more importantly, a strong
cover letter will lead to the employer reviewing your resume.
Remember, the intent of a strong cover letter is to make an
introduction to the employer, so that he/she will want to look at your
resume.
Following up a strong cover letter with a sound
resume is the next step.
Things to
consider with cover letters and your resume:
- Explain that you are sending (or attaching) a
resume.
- Most resumes should include a cover letter.
- Don't make the reader guess what you are asking
for.
- Be specific.
- Are you looking for a part-time job?
- Do you want a summer internship?
- Are you seeking a permanent position at
graduation?
- Are you ready for a new job opportunity now?
- Tell specifically how you learned about the
position or the
organization.
- Did you receive the person's contact
information online?
- Did someone provide it to you?
- Did you get it from a web site or someone
inside the organization?
- It is appropriate to mention the name of
someone who suggested that
you write.
- Try to convince the reader to look at your
resume.
- Explain how your background, education,
training, and/or leadership
skills are applicable to the position you are seeking.
- Explain how you attitude, motivation and
enthusiasm will be an asset
to the organization.
Remember, it's "normally" a step by step process...the cover letter gets the
potential
employer to look at your resume.
The resume gets you in for an
interview.
The job interview
gets you the hire (the job).
The resume cover letter may be the first (or last) thing that a
potential employer sees about you.
Make it count. It must be well
written and targeted to that employer and the potential job
opportunity.
