A New Career
Is Exciting
But Do Your Homework First
A new career can be very exciting. I know it rejuvenated me. But at
some point during your career change, you will want to consider some
counseling and/or career
advice.
I recommend starting out with someone you trust and respect.
After you
have gained insight from that person, you can always branch out and
locate a professional career
advisor.
In my experience, the journey to a new career, at some point, will
involve outside career assistance.
There are many terms used to
describe this person; such as a career advisor, career coach, career
counselor or in my case...a mentor.
If you are considering a career change, I think it is important to
begin with looking at the big picture.
You should be able to:
- Understand what your desires and wishes are.
- Understand what type of work you prefer to do.
- Understand your work habits and skills.
- Realize your values, preferences and passions.
- Come up with some potential work possibilities.
- Present yourself confidently to the workplace.
- Evaluate new work opportunities.
As you work together with your advisor on your career, remember to look
back at your career development plan and getting started strategies.
You should be able to work at your own pace during the career
development process.
An effective career
planning process should include:
A Self
assessment
- You should clarify all you education,
interests, preferred work
environment and career development needs...to name a few.
An Assessment
of your skills and abilities
- Where are you at currently with you career
education and skill set?
A list of
potential career options
- Take into account your career finder
recommendations.
A plan for
setting your goals and take action
- No plan is complete until you put it into
action.
- Your first step may
be to seek further education, enhance your skills or make changes in
your current job.
For me, these steps were extremely helpful when I was looking for a new
job opportunity.
It kept me focused and less stressed.
If a new career is not something you are ready to undertake, you may
want to consider looking at potential telecommuting
opportunities
within your organization.
And lastly, you may also want to take advantage of home business
opportunities during your career planning process.
These home
businesses helped change my life, and I believe they would work for you
as well.
