Networking is King
For Job Seekers

Networking, for me, produces more positive results for job hunting than any other strategy.

What do I mean by this? It's all about making contact with people and developing relationships.

Let's face it, some of the best jobs in the world aren't posted anywhere. We all have a friend of a friend who got a dream job, making a ton of money. Why? Because he/she "knew somebody".

You may have a bigger career resource pool than you think. This is how I built my career circle (of thousands of folks) and how you can too.
  • Talk to people (who might know people) who could help you out. "Experts" in the field will tell you to try "cold calls" or to approach strangers at parties and such.
    • Knock yourself out if you are that type of person.
  • For me? I will stick with people I know "first" and then use them as a branch to the next person.
    • This will eventually lead to someone new to add to my contact list.
  • Make a list of people who you know, who might be able to help you out. This could come from:
    • Family and friends (of course)
    • Relatives
    • Neighbors
    • Business executives you might know
    • Mentors and advisors (career advisor)
    • Professors
    • Former employer
    • Former co-workers
    • Professional organizations you belong to
    • Class reunions
    • Club meetings
    • Volunteer organizations
    • People from your church
    • Business conferences
    • Education classes
    • Fellow Alumni (use the alumni website if available to help track them down)
Key Career Advice and Tips
  • Keep track of your efforts using a contact list.
  • Be sincere. But don't beg them for help.
  • Be honest.
  • Branch out from the people you know first...to the people "they" know.

It's important to keep track of your networking results in a contact list. You will undoubtedly make new contacts as you begin your career search.

Contacts may also come from career employment searches on a company's website, job fairs or through various online job sites.
