Medical Background Check
Required At Many Organizations Today

Part of your pre employment screening and may include a medical background check, and as a condition of employment

A medical screening is a method for detecting disease or body dysfunction before an individual would normally seek medical care.

Screening tests are usually administered to individuals without current symptoms, but who may be at high risk for certain adverse health outcomes.

Similar to employment background checks, a medical screening is an employer's way to protect themselves against lawsuit and other legal matters.

Organizations that require medical background checks strive to ensure all employees can perform the essential functions of their job with reasonable accommodation, and without undue risk of injury to themselves or their co-workers.

All organization will have their unique medical screening procedures.  But most will include some of all of the following:

  • Medical Questionnaire
  • Blood Pressure
  • Listing of Known Allergies
  • Blood Screening (various tests completed)
  • Cholesterol Check
  • Review of Immunizations
  • Tuberculin Skin Test
  • Hearing Test
  • Eyesight Test
  • EKG (Heart Monitor)
  • Psychological Testing
  • Urinalysis (in conjunction with employment drug screening)
Some organizations have in-house medical staff who conduct the test while others allow you to seek you private health care provider...providing you follow the employer's requirements.

The nature of an employee’s job, location, and contact with customers may dictate the need for additional testing.

Under special circumstances, it may be determined that special job accommodations are required for an employee to perform their job function.

Depending on policy, some organizations will work with Occupational Health and Safety and/or Human Resources to determine if reasonable accommodations are met...or performance of job without undue risk of injury to self and others, can be achieved.

Employment may be terminated if the employee cannot perform the essential functions of the job with reasonable accommodation, or if they present an undue risk of injury to themselves or others.
