Use a Job Board
To Exchange Career Ideas

Job boards are basically online websites dedicated to helping people find jobs...and for employers to find people.

I think of them as the monster job search engines out there today.

They can provide a ton of valuable career information.

But I found that in order to access many of these sites to obtain any useful data, you had to have some sort of profile or account access.

For me, it was getting to the point where I was creating and collecting online profiles by the handful

...but not really getting any closer to finding a job.

The job website board (or job e-board) is used by employers and job seekers alike. Companies provide job applicants (you) with greater access to job openings.

It also allows hiring managers and human resource personnel a large pool of candidates to choose from.

In other words, everyone submits their resume and the managers pluck out the ones they need.

CareerMaze.com defines a job board as:

  • A web site where HR, Recruiters, and Hiring Managers go to find employees.
  • Sites such as Monster.com charge companies to post positions and search their database to find candidates.
  • And some sites offer these services for free.
  • Job Postings Boards on the Internet have become the preferred way to find candidates.
  • By posting your resume to these Job Posting Websites you are increasing the chances that you will be identified through a search.
The term job board comes from a physical poster board you would see at various employment agencies.  In fact, you probably see something similar to this today.

At grocery stores or laundromats for instances, you may see a poster board with a bunch of "for sale" items hung up with a thumb tack.

Well, today, these "job e-boards" are online where anyone from across the globe with Internet access can see (and be seen).

The professional career advisors at WiseGeek.com have provided some useful tidbits on how we can benefit from the use of job e-boards.  They state that:
  • You’ll find a variety of job e-board types of the Internet. Companies like Monster.com and Craigslist can help you view job boards of all kinds.
  • They may be organized around specific occupations, locations, or some companies actually search jobs for you if you have filled out applications for them.
  • Some job e-boards are devoted to certain types of work. For instance, if you want to be a freelance writer, you can find numerous job board sites, which allow you to apply for jobs or to bid for work.
  • In most major fields, you’ll find websites devoted specifically to searches within that profession.
  • Job e-boards tend to make money for people who are willing to post jobs on the Internet. Companies like Craigslist and Monster charge companies who want to place ads for jobs on the board.
    • They do not charge people who want to search these sites and look for work.
  • There are a few job posting boards which will charge you to search for jobs, and these may not be good investments.

Generally companies list in multiple locations, and what you can find on one site, you can find on another that doesn’t charge you to look or apply.
