International
Job Search
Is Tricky, But Not Impossible
As I've mentioned previously, an international job search takes a
slightly different approach.
Before you jump right in and
actively search for a job opportunity
overseas, it may help to review the principles explained in the getting
started and job search strategy sections.
In any case, I've compiled a list of some of the key aspects relating
to an overseas job search.
Although some of these are important
regardless of your desired work location, I tried to tailor theme
around an international job search mindset.
Consider the following to help you decide
whether or not a job overseas is something you truly
desire.
Education
- We all know how important education is. But it
is even more important
when beginning the international job search.
- You can find work abroad
with little education, but any kind of degree will increase your
chances significantly.
Finances
- It may be obvious to you that it requires less
money in reserves if you
already have a job lined up overseas.
- But if you are just going by the
seat of your pants and moving abroad first before securing a job, it is
recommended that you have at least three months living expenses saved
up. At least!
Health
- The better shape you are in, the better.
- The first few months after
moving abroad will be the hardest.
- It may take a lot of energy to get
into the swing of things and settled into your new surroundings.
Mental stamina
- You will undoubtedly run into a few snags along
the way.
- Having a good
perspective on your situation and an understanding that things will go
wrong at times will better prepare you for the challenges ahead.
Consider new
ideas
- Find new ways of looking for that new job.
- If you are
overseas already, try going out on the street and actually making
conversation with people.
- Visit some of the local organizations and see
what the business climate is like.
Be nice, and
respectful of your environment
- In all my years of living abroad, this is
probably the one aspect that
has proven more valuable than any other.
Expatriates
- Seek other expatriates for international job
search advice. These
people have already gone through the process.
- What better advice can
you get than from someone who has already lived the dream?
- It’s never
too late to network.
Flexibility
- Realize that the perfect dream job overseas is
going to require some
give and take. Be flexible enough to make some trade offs.
- At first,
your expectations may not be perfectly aligned, but get in there and
start.
If you are working at a company you like, there are always
opportunities for branching out in different areas. The key is to get
your foot in the door at your overseas job location, and then take it
from there.
Living abroad can be one of the most fulfilling experiences you will
come across.
Prior to your international job search, it is important to
begin with a self assessment and get the full perspective of what
working abroad has to offer you.
Both the pros and the cons.
I am all for living life to the fullest.
Try a new job out, eat the
food, meet new people, make friends, make money...but whatever you
decide, make the most of it.
