Do Employment Agencies Assist You
...Or the Company?

Although there is no magic list of employment agencies (or staffing agencies), some are better than others.

I would have paid a pretty penny to find that ideal company which would guarantee me my dream job.

The problem was, I could not find one.

Here are some tips on what to look out for.
  • If you choose to use a professional agency, do your homework.
  • Determine what the costs (if any) will be.
  • Figure out whether or not you have to sign an "intent" letter.
    • This may require you to use only one service for a set period of time.
  • Staffing and employment help are common at job fairs.
  • Before accepting services from an employment agency, I would recommend a face to face meeting, if possible.
  • A visit to the organization's office will allow you to do a little background check before committing to anything.
    • I would want to know who I'm dealing with.
    • Are they interested in helping me out?
    • Or are they focused on helping the company they represent?
    • This is true for online recruitment agencies as well.
One piece of career advice I received while job hunting was...most staffing agencies get paid a fee by a company for finding ideal candidates.

Meaning...if they hire you, they receive a fee from the employer. Makes sense to me. But be cautious of companies that want your money up front without providing any service.

The traditional staffing agency assists job seekers in finding work. Some firms charge the job seeker, so be sure to clarify, upfront, if there is a fee.

Others are paid by the employer. In most cases, Personally speaking, I would not suggest using an agency that charges the job seeker.  There are too many free ones out there that are "on your side".

If headhunters, recruiters and employment agencies are not providing you the service you need, you may want to seek one or more career advisors for assistance.
