Education Background Check
Part of Pre Employment Screening

An education background check is one the the most often used conditions of employment used by organizations today.

When hiring an individual, companies base salary packages and positions on the individual's education.

Unfortunately, studies show that nearly one quarter of the information individuals supply regarding education, dates of attendance, degrees, and institution is false or embellished.

Organizations that fail to verify important educational information can lead to appointing unqualified people to positions they don't deserve, which in turn, affects a company's ability to compete.

To counter this, an education verification process is used to confirm schools attended, diplomas, degrees & certificates awarded and additional information as applicable.

There are a number of organizations who provide services dedicated to education background screening.

Some of the more common elements of an education background check include the verification of:

  • Highest level of education
  • Degree(s) achieved
  • Diploma(s) awarded
  • Certificate(s) awarded
  • Levels completed
  • Area of concentration (emphasis)
  • Honors received
  • Dates attended
Employers may conduct an education screenings of their own, or hire a company to process educational background verification.

This organization will, in turn, contact educational institutions directly to verify degrees, certifications earned, etc.

Education verification results are generally returned within 24-72 business hours.

There are instances when employers are unable to verify the highest degree obtained and/or the dates of attendance for the educational institution that has been listed by the applicant/employee.

This could result from an inaccurate name and/or dates of attendance, the educational institution being closed for the summer/holiday or the degree listed being false and/or never completed.

The lessen to be learned here is to make sure your education history on your resume and/or job application is as accurate as possible.
