Cover Letter Help
Is Right Around The Corner

Some of the best cover letter help begins with selecting the right type to use.

There are dozens of formats to choose from.

Each format varies slightly depending on your style, the job you are applying for and the audience (your potential employer).

But regardless of the type, there are standard sections that each cover letter should consider:

First Paragraph
  • Think of this as "Why I'm Writing".
    • Introduce yourself and your interests. Be specific about what type of position you are looking for and what you can offer the company in return.
    • ex. "I am contacting you in regards to a sales management position within your company. If your organization is seeking a loyal and dedicated leader who can deliver bottom-line sales results to clients across the globe, I'd like to make a strong case for myself".
Second Paragraph
  • Think of this as "How I am Qualified."
    • Briefly describe your academic and professional qualifications. Briefly...don't bore them to tears.
  • Provide more information about how you can deliver the benefits you mention in the first paragraph.
    • Be sure to stress accomplishments and achievements rather than job duties and responsibilities.
  • You'll often see cover letters which combine the second and third paragraphs.
    • As long as you have all the suggested parts in there, you should be ok.

Third Paragraph
  • Think of this paragraph as "Why I'm Right for this Job."
    • Relate yourself to the company, giving details about why you should be considered for the job.
    • This is a good place to demonstrate your knowledge of the company or industry.
Fourth Paragraph
  • The final paragraph of your cover letter must be proactive and request action.
    • You should express your confidence that you are a perfect fit for the job.
    • Also let the employer know that you plan to follow-up within a specified time.
I recommend keeping several different versions of your letter, in order to provide cover letter help down the road.

You'll see in the fax cover letter area how different categories of your cover letter may be written depending on the job.
