Career Resource Assistance
Is A Must for Job Seekers

One career resource tool I like to use involves researching the company and the job opportunity using whatever search method I have available.

Do you currently have a job but are thinking about a career change? Or are you just entering the job market and need some career advice?

No matter how you look at it, creating a list of career factors to help you evaluate a potential job opportunity will go a long way.

Think of a career resource as any tool to help you examine your employment goals.

An example would be to list environmental factors as they relate to evaluating a job offer. Such as:

The Industry
  • What is your interest in that industry?
  • What is your interest in that particular field?
  • Is there potential for long term growth?
  • What does a career path look like for your field of interest?

The Job Position
  • What is your interest in the specified job duties?
  • Is there a potential to expand your job desires to other parts of the organization?
  • What opportunities are there for job advancement?
  • What is the potential salary (wages)? See the salary negotiation strategy section for more.
  • What kind of hours will you be required to work?
  • Is there any travel associated with the position?

The Company
  • What is the reputation of the company?
  • Are they a start-up company?
  • Will they be around in a few years?
  • Does the company plan on expansion and growth?

The Management
  • What is your supervisor like?
  • Will you like working for him/her?
  • Do you know your "management chain" and are they people you would like to work for?

Outside Concerns
  • Is the job located in a part of the country you would want to live?
  • Does your family like the area where you live? (relocation concerns)
  • If you need to relocate, is housing affordable? (utilities, etc.)
  • What is the school system like? The community?
