Career
Employment
Listings on Organization Website
Finding career employment on a company's website yields different
(often better) results than the massive job search engines.
In my experience in the job hunting business, using an organization's
career section is like cutting out the middle-man.
While searching for employment on an organization's website, you will
take out one layer in your job hunting process. Rather than going
through a third party, such as a headhunter,
recruiter
or employment
agency, you will deal directly with the organization.
What I mean by "company websites" involves looking for and applying to
a position using the website of the organization you are interested in.
You will notice a section on the main homepage of most companies
something along the lines of "careers". I would say that about 95% of
the companies I researched during my job hunting experience had a
section like this.
Every organization is slightly different. Some will let you apply for a
job right there on their website. Others will only allow you to submit
your resume to a generic email address. If you're lucky, you will have
a name and contact information for the job you are interested in. Use
it.
As with job search engines, there
are pros and cons with using a
company's website as your sole career employment search
strategy.
Pros (the
positives)
-
Apply for a position directly on the company's
site, rather than the
big job search engines.
- Cuts out the extra job search step and shows
exactly what the
company has for potential job opportunities.
- You can usually submit your resume
for a specific job by uploading
it right onto the company's website.
- Ideally, you may be provided contact
information in order to conduct
a follow up.
- Some organizations allow you to keep a profile
on their system. And
then they offer to contact you if a job match occurs.
Cons (the
negatives)
- You will have to log onto many company websites
to get your resume
out.
- Whereas the job search engines reach hundreds
(thousands) of
organizations with just one profile.
- Sometimes a job is posted on a company website
in order to fulfill
legal or human resource requirements.
- It other words, the job posting
might be unintentionally misleading.
- You may be competing with people who are
already working inside the
organization and have an established network.
- Organizations are notorious for not updating
their job postings.
- Many jobs are often not listed or out of date.
Key Career
Employment Advice and Tips:
- As with the other search tools, use it, but
don't rely on this ALONE.
- Cast a wide net. The more you search, the more
you find.
- It is always better to deal with a person than
a website or search
engine.
- When possible, submit your resume
and then follow up with a phone
call or email.
After you have posted your resume to the big job search engines
and
career
employment websites...and built up your networking and contact
list, it is time to venture out and visit a local job
fair.
